The most important part of the electric power system, high—tension transmission line,which is the key point to make electrical energy into usable, is always damaged easily fromnatural and human during its working time. However, this damage without visible traces,which brings difficulties to the troubleshooting work, always causes imponderable outage lossduring the line faults. So, when line faults happen, the work to make sure fault locationquickly and accurately is significant to not only repair the lines for stable power supply, butalso ensure a stable, safe, and economical electric power system.At present, the most widely used locate method in electric power system, fault analysis,which causes deviation of the results higher than10%of the line length, cannot meet therequirements of fault fast positioning. Meanwhile, for the reason that travelling wave faultlocation device used in some lines is working with the two terminal fault location method, andsometimes supplemented by single terminal fault location method, the dependence on GPStime service system and special communication channel to locate accurately and communicatein time, is very great. All of which make it hard to raise the locator’s cost in the electric powersystem.To get more efficient calculation with the help of LS97lifting scheme wavelet to liftparameters in its step, this paper will study the locating performance through the combinationof single terminal fault location method which is more accurate and lifting scheme waveletwhich is more efficient, on the basis of studying on the widely used travelling wave faultlocation device which is not accurate enough, and high cost. Besides, the locating principle oflifting scheme wavelet will be actualized with the short cycle designed, cost—effective, andfield programmable FPGA in this study. The FPGA got from lifting scheme waveletcalculation, which can meet the requirements of both high speed data processing in travellingwave fault location and low cost in electric power system, can locate the fault position quicklyand in time, through debugging and simulation in this study.
