Transmission line plays an important role in power system. However, the environment in which the transmission line tends to be relatively bad, prones to failure. When faults occur in the transmission line, if the faults could be located quickly and accurately, the causes and locations of the faults could be found speedily to quickly troubleshoot and to improve the security of the power grid operation. As the series standards of smart grid "substation communication networks and systems", IEC61850standardized communication behavior between substation intelligent electronic devices (IED) and substation automation system to realize the mutual operation and seamless communication between the IED of different manufactures. Therefore, key technology research of new fault location system based on IEC61850has a very significant theoretical significance and broad application prospects.In this paper, we analyzed and studied the IEC61850standard for the principle and model of basic communication structure and the abstract service interfaces; we established the data model and software architecture that compliance with the IEC61850communication standard according to the needs of the practical application of the traveling wave ranging system; we ranged the fault lines with the traveling wave fault location algorithm; then we design and implement the client software of traveling wave fault location system, and designed the verification method and technology combined with the basic framework of the server software. The traveling wave data was collected by the server software and uploaded to the client, the initial wave-head-time that the fault traveling wave reaching the substation was analysed by wavelet transform technology in the client software, the wave-head-time head was abstracted as the node in traveling wave network topology, the network topology was mapped to radioactive tree topology by the minimum spanning tree method, the shortest path of propagation of the traveling wave was computed by Dijkstra algorithm, and the fault time and accurate location of the fault line was computed combined with the valid data of every substation in the traveling network. The simulation results show that, the traveling wave fault location method proposed in this paper has a high locating accuracy, compliance with the data model of traveling wave collection device of IEC61850standard, and it could effectively support the function of digital substation to lay the foundation interoperability between smart grid devices.
