Architectures of the National Sun Yat-sen University built in the1930s (EarlyArchitectures) are still in use in the North Campus of South China University of Technology,though their quality, functions and surroundings have changed greatly. How toprotect and utilize early architectures has become a crucial project of campus design andconstruction. From the perspective of context, the thesis forms the research frame of trinity,analyzes the contextual symbols and connotation of early architecture, dissects typical casesof early architecture re-utilization and gives advices about conservation and utilization ofearly architecture.1. By analyzing the characteristics of the Early Architectures, the context was showed:rationalism in general planning, combination of view, symmetric in the planning. The stylewas a combination of both Chinese and Western tradition, including the traditional revival,modernism and the mixed style. Western modern design technology was used in the vastmajority of building plane and space design, and it was convenient, efficient and practical; thedetails were of traditional styles which included the red brick and the green tiles, and it wasdecorated with improved innovated decoration and patterns. The construction used the mostadvanced technology and materials in that time and was of high quality.2. By comprehensive analyzing the historical background, the design’s idea andarchitectural context representation, the abundant contextual connotation of EarlyArchitectures of SCUT was discovered. In the first place, the cultural diversity realized inmixed architectural styles, the conflict and combination of mixed background shaped thebuilding and resulted in the coexisting of three styles. It embodied the Lingnan spirit of openand inclusive. Secondly, the thoughts of Chinese Renaissance represented in palace-likecampus buildings were reflected the social psychology of traditional revival. Thirdly,innovation and rational renovated thoughts and constructing technology showed the practicalinnovation spirit of local people. Finally, the idea of“saving the country by fostering the youth,making the best university in south China showed the contemporary people had regarded therevitalization of the national a vital thing and attached importance to education and science.3. Based on architectural contextual analysis of representation and connotation of theearly architectures of the campus, the thesis dissects three context inheritance cases of the early campus planning, building groups, building monomer, summarizes the valid experiencesand deficiency of the cases and points out the contradictions and problems that exist in thecampus context inheritance, puts forward some suggestions of context inheritance. It proposescorresponding suggestions to satisfy the requirements of modern campus according with themodern features, showing the profound culture and the changing function in the campus.Findings of the thesis have certain theoretical value and practical significance inpromotion and development of campus architectural culture as well as in conservation andutilization of early architecture.
