With the rapid development of economic globalization and the flaring developmenttendency of the railway transportation, the passenger volume is increased quickly andthe old railway passenger stations could not satisfy the multiple needs of the passengers.All the old railway passenger stations in China start the update and alteration work tosatisfy the new needs of people. As the sub-stations of transportation, railway passengerstations play a role of the window and calling card of the city. Due to the influence ofglobalization, the urbanization process of China is faster, the homoplasy of the big citiesprovides a great challenge to the regional characters of the cities and the living standardof people is continually increased, from which the people gradually realize theimportance of the development and inheritance of regional culture. Based on theprinciple of people-oriented, adaption to local condition and ecological environmentprotection, designing railway passenger stations with regional landscape characters isnot only good for the prominence of city characters, but also good for the strengtheningof the identity of different cities and the belongingness of passengers.At present, the inconspicuousness of regional characteristic is a universal problemin the domestic railway stations squares. As the planning of national high-speed railwaynetwork gradually becomes grown, the construction of station square in high-speedrailway station has been carried out in an all-round way. There are fewer theoreticalresearches and practices on this field at home, which expects new design theory tosupport the practical project urgently.Based on the above-mentioned issue, this thesis takes regionalism, place spirit,landscape ecology, environmental psychology, semiology and other related theories asthe research foundation. By studying the regional expression of the landscape design inthe station squares of three railway terminal passenger stations in Wuhan, namelyWuchang Railway Station, Hankou Railway Station and High-speed Wuhan RailwayStation, this study explores the differences between old and new station squares inlandscape design and finds out the idea and method of new station square inhighlighting the landscape design with regional characteristics. It summarizes thestrategies and principles of regional landscape design in new station square, with apurpose to provide future design and practice of regional landscape in railway stationwith specific theoretical foundation.
