As one of the most significant global issues, both the western developed country and China focus in the healthy and sustained growth of urban spatial. Since Reformation and Opening, earthshaking changes and rapid economic growth have taken place in China. However, the process of urbanization in China lagged far behind the western developed country is constraining economic development. In the urban spatial growth progress of China, it reflects several unique defects and deficiencies exposed. As one of the most special representative city in China, getting down researching the characteristic and mechanism of Chongqing will comply with sustainable development and provide scientific decision support to the government. Further More, It also will optimize urban spatial context of cities in south China.Bases on the remote sensing data of TM during1996to2009, history and planning materials as well as the social and economic statistical yearbook data, this research applies the GIS spatial analysis and mathematic statistic method in order to analysis the characteristic of the urban spatial growth and land use changes of Chongqing metropolitan area during the nearest10years. This research focuses on the analysis of the driving factors of Chongqing metropolitan area during1996to2009, using the econometric modeling method and system analysis method. Then probes into the influencing factors of the urban spatial growth from the environment of natural resources constraint and humanities social driving two respects. After that, this research emphasis on social factors economic population three quantitative factors can be traffic model measuring fitting and index selection, then select the key indexes through comparison with the purpose of finding the mechanism of urban spatial growth in both Chongqing metropolitan area and mountainous cities. Finally, based on the growth economy theory, this research puts forward the countermeasures of urban spatial growth in mountainous cities. Basic conclusions are as follows:Firstly, the urban spatial growth history change history vein in study area is clear. Secondly, the morphological characteristics of urban spatial expansion are outside postponing type and the internal filling is not enough. The overall development trends of land use scale quantity characteristics are high speed growth model.Thirdly, the growth of the urban spatial is the result of the natural resource drive and the social drive. Natural geographical environment and natural resources driving factor is the important drive while the humanities social driving factor is the dominant drive. Economy is the first driving force of the growth of the urban spatial, followed by population and traffic; Natural environment and natural resources, decision-making and other external driving factors also play important roles. The population growth, traffic progress and economic development are closely related with urban spatial growth. Among them, the total population, the non-agricultural population, the end of highway mileage, the per capita GDP and infrastructure investment are indexes which have positive function driver to urban spatial growth.Fourthly, the main mainstays who drive the urban growth in mountainous city is "people" and can be divided into four levels:the national and regional, local government, enterprises and citizens from internal and external two angle of urban spatial growth into play. From the internal, constitute the transformation, the demand of consumption, natural economic interests, policy guidance are four main driving force, they interact with each other and connect together to form the driving mechanism of urban spatial growth in mountainous cities; As external drive mechanism is concerned, the state’s external regulation, the regional strategy development, the game between city, social technological progress, the level of productivity development and interregional market freedom constitute external constraints.Lastly, the growth should breaking out of the condition of the government a single dominant, and pay more attention to the participation of the main mainstay of the preferences and demand, and to coordinate the conflicts of interest between benefit main mainstay, and optimize the urban management structure; The growth should also control city economic growth as the guidance, paying attention to the economic development and infrastructure; As well as the above, the government should pay attentions to the transportation investment in order to guide the direction of urban growth; According to the urban space growing shortage problem, government can consider establishing control countermeasures to solve problem, such as the manipulated; What’s more, urban growth should join the path of regional development for the propose to make use of the outside resource.
