Study On The Effect Of Foreign Trade On Carbon Emissions In Jiangsu

With the rapid economic development, Jiangsu Province has been increasing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, which puts a serious challenge to the environment. At the same time, foreign trade also affects energy consumption and carbon emissions by direct or indirect import and export of energy. However, what is the extent of influence? What is the impact mechanism? They are of important significance to the energy conservation and emission reduction in Jiangsu province and the subjects that this paper intends to study,In order to study the influence of trade on energy consumption carbon emission comprehensively, this paper uses two research methods, the structure decomposition method and the index decomposition method. Based on the 2002, 2007 and 2012input-output data, this paper firstly uses the structure decomposition method to decompose Jiangsu Province’s energy consumption into seven kinds of effects,including export expansion effect and the import substitution effect; Secondly, take the index decomposition method to decompose respectively carbon emissions caused by the import and export into the structure effect, the scale effect and the technical change effect, which are conducive to further explore trade on the influence mechanism of carbon emissions.The structure decomposition finds that economic growth factors are the main factors to promote the energy consumption, while the effect of change in energy intensity is the main factor to cut down energy consumption, the effect of technical change imposes a certain inhibitory effect on energy consumption, but the effect is very small; the export expansion effect promotes the carbon emissions of various industries, while import substitution effect has different influence on energy consumption and carbon emission in various industries. The index decomposition finds that the import and export of energy consumption carbon emissions is consistent generally, the structure effect and the scale effect of import and export promote the carbon emissions, while the technical effect cut carbon emission; But for different industries, these effects show different roles. Finally, this paper puts forward some countermeasures and suggestions in order to provide references for Jiangsu province to coordinate economic development and energy conservation.
