With the continuous development of social economy and modern science and technology, market and enterprise demand for steel is more and more demanding. Controlling slag quantity plays an important role in converter steelmaking. At present, there are lots of methods for stopping slag, and method of stopping slag with slide gate has great advantages which attract the attention of the enterprise.Based on similarity on similarity principle, an 1:10 converter model was built up. Researches include different methods of slag-stopping, different operation methods of stopping slag with slide gate and different improved shapes of slide gate. Influences of these factors on slag quantity, tapping time and residual steel were studied. Obtained that using slag stopper with slide gate has the best effect in the ways of slag-stopping tapping. In this way, the quantity of the slag involved is 119ml(original type is 1190ml), the tapping time is 132.2s, and the success rate of slag stopping reaches 100%. Its quantity of the slag involved reduced 27% than slag stopper with self-control, and its tapping time reduced 36%. Combining with production practice, slag stopper with slide gate and slag stopper with self-control can work together to form a combined double-mechanism system of slag-stopping tapping in converter. Based on the different controlling requirement of quantity of the slag involved during converter tapping in producing different kinds of steel grade, reasonable chose one kind of slag-stopping tapping way in the double-mechanism system. On the basis of using slag-stopping with slide gate, used the operation method that standing sliding brick for 10 s after shut down the valve of slide gate, and the residual steel reduced 2176 ml than original operation method, the quantity of the slag involved is 820ml(original type is 8200ml), the tapping time is 179 s. In the experiment of improving the shape of sliding brick, the best effect of slag stopping is newly added tapping hole with small diameter, the quantity of the slag involved is 220ml(original is 2200ml), the tapping time is 170.8s, and the residual steel is almost 0. Comprehensive consideration, using newly added smaller diameter tapping hole and improved shape of sliding brick to process slag-stopping tapping with slide gate is the best. Meanwhile, this project can increase the service life of sliding brick, lower the whole cost, and obtain better economic benefit.
