An Application Study Of Material Innovation In The Design Of Concept Books

Books have accompanied the development of mankind throughout history. Nowadays, books present various forms, among which concept books are favored by an increasing number of readers because of their unique beauty. At the same time, with the development of society and the constant advancement of science and industrial technology, people’s aesthetic standard on the concept book is continuously refreshing, putting higher requirements on its design. The design of concept book is a comprehensive artistic expression and is a concentrated presentation of aesthetics, editing and typesetting, material, workmanship, science and technology, and humanity. Among them, material is a very important process of design,which not only shows the physical basis of concept books, but also is the medium that can trigger reader’s feeling and imagination and satisfy their needs on its function most directly in all designing processes. Different materials bear different characteristics and its unique artistic beauty, which “common typography and bookbinding” don’t have. Therefore, “the innovative application of materials” is necessary and significant for the designing of concept books. By this way, more irregular materials can be deployed, and more textures, forms, contents and features can be explored, so that innovative application can be used in the design of concept books. Hence the emotional influence of the concept book is increased, the art expressive force improved, and the aesthetic content enriched.This paper compiled, classified, and analyzed the unconventional designing material in an exploring manner, and generalized the relationship between material innovation and concept books. Through compiling and classification, the typical texture and deep-rooted functions of different materials are discovered so as to fully release the potential of materials on the function of concept books and to realize the goal of better carrying the information of books.By means by comparison and analysis, the paper looked for a new way to improve the reader’s reading and function experiences through material, and explored creative and practical ways to awake reader’s senses and feelings comprehensively, therefore to guide the reader to feel “synaethesia” gradually or even “mental sensation” in a deeper sense. By generalizing the relationship between material innovation and concept books, the paper provided new imaginary space for concept book designing ideas, and fully presented the artistic charm of the information conducted by materials.
