Ecological footprint is a kind of tool, which makes a compration between the resources supplied by us and the consumption by us.Economic development increases the influence of human activity on ecological environment, as a quantifiable comparison of evaluation index, ecological footprint can evaluate the impact of human activities to the environment and measure the sustainability of economic development, it contributes a lot to the sustainability of economic development as well as to assess the ecological security level. This paper makes a comparison between year of 2005 and 2010 of ecological footprint of Beijing by building the ecological footprint model based on input-output technology, but still exceeds what is available locally in terms of supporting the final consumption. Our result show that: from the aspect of sectors, Farming, Forestry, Animal husbandry and Fishery sector、Processing of Petroleum, Coking, Processing of Nuclear Fuel sector 、Transportation, Storage and posts and Other Services occupy more EF as a consequence of more land use or energy use associated with their sector characteristics; In term of final demand, it is necessary to find that urban residents’ consumption takes up most absolute amount and has the largest proportion; from the three scale point of view, EF emboied in domestic demand of Beijing is the largest. In order to guide the practice of sustainable development, driving factors of EF in Beijing was analyzed using structural analysis. The changes in EF of Beijing were broken down into three effects :activity effect、structure effect and intensity effect. The result indicates that economic growth was the major pull of increasing in EF, and structure change has limited effect on decline of EF, the overall development trend was dominated by intensity effect which reflects the improvement in technology, changes in energy type and other factors related to technology improvement.Based on the dynamic change of the ecological footprint of Beijing and its driving factors, a nd the existing policy of Beijing, some policy suggestions were put forward as followed: continue s to implement environmental regulation policy, promote the adjustment of industrial structure u pgrade, energy saving.
