Because of the complexity and irreversibility of the long distance transportation of iron ore concentrate pipeline engineering construction, it requires a complete construction, which can avoid the huge economic losses in the late to make up for the quality problem. And the efficiency and the safety reliability of the pipeline field welding are the most important indicators to measure the quality of pipeline construction.Due to the long distance of pipeline, via the complex terrain, mostly in the field operation, and process required in the pipeline of high pressure resistance, wear resistance,24 hours operating, the requirement of welding quality is much higher than ordinary pipeline welding. The quality and efficiency of the welding directly affect the project construction period and the pipeline safe operation, so the quality control of the welding process is very important.Total quality management is introduced in this paper, to improve the welding quality of long-distance transport of iron concentrate pipeline "Dahongshan-Yugang" engineering. People adopt the method of 4M1E, combining pipe welding process, analyzing the factors of personnel, machinery, materials, method, and environment which influence the welding quality, Using PDCA cycle management model of "planning, implementation, inspection, improvement", timely solved the relative problems in welding construction, controlled and continuously improved the quality of the welding construction. This paper analyzed and improved the welding quality defects such as "wrong side, lack of penetration, edge biting, weld width, porosity slag".Various quality defects are solved which are easy to appear in the pipeline welding process by using PDCA quality analysis and improvement, the welding quality pass rate of the whole "Dahongshan-Yugang" iron concentrate pipeline is controlled about 97%, the Welding team is trained, construction process is reduced, and the construction period is shortened, the final project investment is reduced, and the late pipeline safe operation is ensured.This paper argues that total quality management plays a great guiding and promoting role in welding quality control of long-distance transport of iron concentrate pipeline engineering. For its requirements of long-term, full, all-round, and the whole process, the total quality management should be applied more widely and deeper in Various aspects of the iron concentrate pipeline engineering.
