A Morphologic Semantic Study On The Tang Dynasty Furniture

Tang dynasty furniture occupies an important position in the history of Chinese furniture, which is the transitional period from the low furniture to high furniture. Strong national strength and open policy in tang dynasty promoted the birth of new furniture, which has a round plump feature. This paper analyzes the elements of tang dynasty furniture and studies the semantic information of furniture from the semantic perspective. What’s more, this paper will also conclude the applications of semantic language of the tang dynasty furniture in the modern space.Since tang dynasty was one thousand years ago, which means little tang dynasty furniture exist until now. As a result, we need to rely on Dunhuang mural, unearthed tomb mural, reel painting and Shosoin of Japan. And the main research methods are the literature method, collecting graphics and text, the analysis of induction and hand-painted drawings method. These factors definitely brought some difficulties to the research, which lead to the lack of systematic and innovative traits in the current research. I hope to fill this blank and make a reference for the further perfection of Tang dynasty furniture.This research creatively treat the form of furniture as a kind of visual symbols, which means making the research not only from the prospect of abstract elements including the point, line, plane and space, but also from the prospect of concretization elements of decorative pattern. It aims to find the rule, representation and semantic content of the formation of tang dynasty furniture. Furthermore, it can help to reveal the feasibility of application of tang dynasty furniture in modern interior space.The application part of this research focuses on the semantic status of furniture in modern Chinese style space. As an important actual case, Luoyang heaven prove the strength of visual expression and conveyance of cultural connotations. This research pointed out that the application of Tang furniture in modern Chinese not only need the "breadth" of material aspect but also need the "depth" of spiritual aspect. In the last part, this research combine the Chinese style living space design and the semantic of modern Chinese style space, choosing the right form to express the general design. Only in this way can we express the Chinese traditional trait of visual impact and cultural expression, and finally create the unique image of national interior space.
