James O’Conner is one of the most important representatives of Ecological Marxism in North America. In his book, Natural Causes, he presents the thought of "productive justice".It was the Ecological thought of Marx and Engels, Western Marxism, the thought of Ecological Civilization, that provide ideological background for the thought of O’Conner; the realistic background of the thought of O’Conner involves below:one, Capitalism counties ignore the Ecological problems. Two, traditional Socialism countries also encountered the Ecological Crisis. Three, the Green Movement have appeared in our society. Firstly, O’Conner rebuilds the Historical Materialism, and then reveals the second contradiction in Capitalist; at last he presents the thought of Ecological Socialism. On these bases, O’Conner elaborates,"productive justice" as the core, the thought of Ecological Marxism. He considers these points:achieve "distributive justice" instead of "productive justice","productive justice" is the only way to "justice", and Ecological Socialism is the only way to "productive justice".The thought of "productive justice" of O’Conner has far-reaching theoretic and realistic significance:it actually enriches and develops the Ecological angel for justice of Marx, and expands the Ecological meaning of Socialism, most important, it can provide enlightenment for our Ecological Civilization. However, this thought also has faults in some respects. Therefore, we need dialectical sight on this thought.
