The design focuses and service objects are changing with the development of humansociety. With the current global degradation of natural resource and the crisis ofsustainable development, what roles of design should play to maximize its value? Thedesigner should participate in the overall planning of the entire projects. In this Chinesegiant salamander conservation project that the designer was genuinely involved, biodiversity is facing crisis because of habitat destruction and pollution, while lowscientific knowledge of the public has further exacerbated this crisis. What design cancontribute to ecological conservation projects, and how design could balance theprotection of natural resources and economic development while facing "non-human"objects?This study built its framework following “change of design purposes-case studyanalysis of design service areas–theory development of practical ecological projects–practical research-summary". Firstly, this study reviewed the historical process of thechanges of design purposes and then discussed the purposes under the currentcircumstances. Secondly, why such changes stated above should be concerned in thecontext of design services was summarized following analysis of interdisciplinary casestudies. Thirdly, this study described the conservation model of the practical project “Asustainable future for Chinese giant salamanders" and the contribution of design in itsearly stage, and focused on the analysis of the determinant factors driving the success ofJapanese giant salamander conservation. Through the theory development in the ChapterIII, Chapter IV suggested the contents and plans of design in participating in the planningof this conservation project. This article discussed the societal role of design in ecological conservation, whichwas not only confined to meeting its own industrial and business needs, but couldpromote ecological innovation through collaboration with other project components. Thisstudy summarized the design methods and experiences learnt focusing on the Chinesegiant salamander conservation project, which enabled the designers’ values in promotingenvironmental sustainability and ecological civilization to be achieved and also provideda new thinking perspective of future ecological conservation and design innovation.
