The technology of cartographic generalization greatly improves the production efficiency of cartographic and reduce the subjectivity of generalization process in digital environment. land-use patch which has the characteristics of full coverage with no overlaps and no gap is the main data in land use database, it’s the object of this paper. How to reduce the spatial resolution and semantic resolution is the main purpose of this study. In this paper, the knowledge rules are summarized in the generalization of land-use patch by studying the characteristics of the land use data. The knowledge of land-use patch generalization is expressed by the production rule in ArcGIS environment, and the corresponding solution strategy is provided. However, the generalization is a set of systematic work, the different geo-processing tool can produce the different data result, and different operating sequence will also lead to inconsistent data results under the same geo-processing tools. So the processing method of land category stratification is put forward in this paper based on the hierarchical organizational structure of geographical database, the generalization of overall situation is transformed into the processing of different land category. The model builder and python scripting tools is provided in ArcGIS, we can make full use of those geo-processing tools and cartographic generalization tools, and the generalization operator is limited to an optimal operation queue by the expression of workflows, so it’s one of the most effective process control which constraint on the generalization process. Finally, according to the number and area of land-use patch, the result of generalization is evaluated by three quantitative indicators which is map loading, semantic similarity and structural similarity. The results showed that the result of generalization basically conform to the requirements of land use data.
