Cartographic generalization has been one of the most challenging and creative researches of cartology and a must for its development, and thus it has been thirsting for better solution for long because the existed ones can not provide an ideal one. Being an important and feeble step during process of automated cartographic generalization, quality control is the key to increase preciseness of software that applied in automated cartography generalization. With expatiation into essence of cartography generalization, design for quality (DFQ), an idea that are newly adopted in automation control of mechanical industry,is imported into research for quality control of cartographic generalization for the first time. Detailed researches and experiments according to the idea are carried out. The main works and creations are as the following:1. Framework of cartography generalization based on DFQ: with analysis into information flow and process of cartography generalization, the framework is put forward with detailed mechanism of quality management and mathematic models, which servers as theory stone for the paper.2. Design of Knowledge base for DFQ based on database techniques: to satisfy requirement from knowledge base for cartography generalization framework based on DFQ, with analysis of current knowledge base for cartography generalization, the design is introduced, which can perfectly manage knowledge of quality and enhance itself with quality control and reasoning ability.3.Data model for quality control of cartography generalization based on R-Tree (DFQR-Tree) and improved policy for partition of cartography generalization coverage based on its natural property: characteristics of DFQR-tree is that improves traditional R-tree by adopting a composite operating axis and can record the whole process of cartography generalization, and thus provides ways to query and control any step of the process; the improved policy includes clustering of mapping data and coalition detecting based on buffer, and thus expand the level of indexing and makes up shortcomings of the old one.4. Solution to assessment and maintenance of consistency of topology during cartography generalization: to meet requirement from topology relationship checking of cartography generalization result, the solution is provided with deep analyzing into current expression of topology. Also a model for roads based topology similarity is designed to maintain consistency of topology.5. Assessment model based on multi-dimension constraints space for cartography generalization: methods included in the model are to set all constraints dimensionless, to create...
