21st century has been called the knowledge explosion era, therefore, it’s a critical issue for the survival and development of enterprises that how to preserve, manage and create knowledge. Knowledge management has been studied and practiced in enterprises aboard for several decades, but the counterpart in China has just been started, and has only been practiced in monomer enterprises, not to mention group enterprise. There are many large diversified groups in China, most of them are large and complex, non-related diversified, constructed with thousands of molecule companies, lacking of clear management and control model and standardized manage means. In the aspect of knowledge management, the knowledge among the whole group is scattered, fragmented and chaotic, knowledge accumulation is relatively weak in headquarter, not systematic in subordinate enterprises, not connected between headquarter and subsidiariesThis article is a case study about building a group-oriented knowledge management system in a typical large state-owned diversified enterprise group called Group E. The study is frontier exploration and practice in group-oriented knowledge management in China.The article contains seven chapters. Chapter one is an introduction, explaining reason and significance why the certain topic is chosen, and the research approach and construction of the topic. Chapter two is about documents study, briefly about the knowledge management theories and knowledge organization theories. Chapter three is the introduction of Group E, including its products and service, strategy, and governance. Chapter four is the current situation and problems analysis with knowledge management in Group E, based on a research. Chapter five is analysis to find out difference of knowledge management between Group E and benchmark companies. Chapter six is the overall design of group-oriented knowledge management system. Chapter seven is the design of implementation system, including knowledge structure, organization and mechanism, incentives, technical system and culture.
