A few days ago, the2014world conference on seed industry as a kind of "Olympic" isheld in Beijing.During the conference, China’s seed industry market development status causeindustry experts attention again. At present, how dose the competitive landscape of China’sseed industry market show? Than compared with the developed countries, what constraintsexist in China’s seed industry science and technology innovation? How far is it from the "seedindustry giants" towards "powers of seed industry "? China is a large agricultural country. Theseed is the most important means of agricultural production. Chinese agricultural seedmarket is the world’s second largest seed market. After the promulgation of "seed law" in2000, Chinese seed industry began the process of market-oriented. Seed marketalizationplayed a very important role on promoting the combination of seed research and agriculturalproduction, as well as becoming intergrated with the international market. However, thethousands of domestic seed industry enterprise scale is generally small, it is difficult to forma seed enterprise with international competitiveness. So the multinational seed enterprisesflooded into Chinese seed market such as the global seed industry top ten. Foreign seedindustry giants seriously squeezed domestic seed enterprises’ living space. And its steping upresearch and development layout in China threated security of Chinese germplasmresources (also known as genetic resources) and seed industry. In this environment, facing thenew situation of development of seed enterprises in the new period, any seed enterprises wantto remain invincible, must seriously analyze and study the new features of development ofseed enterprises, and actively explore and establish the long-term development strategy fit forthe enterprise.Based on the review of previous literature, selected three multinational seed companiesand four domestic seed companies represented, using case study method, the paper generallyanalyzed the listed multinational seed companies and major domestic seedenterprises development process and present situation. Then it analyzed the rule of strategicchoice of transnational seed companies during the period of growth and maturity usingSWOT analysis tool and GE matrix and summarized some suggestions which may be useful for domestic seed companies to choose strategy in future. The conclusions of thispaper are:(1) Seed industry is related to national food safety. The development oftransnational seed companies is due to make full use of the national support and encouragepolicy.(2) During the period of growth and maturity of transnational seed companies throughsuch funds operation way as mergers and acquisitions of other companies achieve rapidgrowth and the expansion of market share. Mergers and acquisitions can achieve resourceintensive, minimum cost, reducing the barriers to enter new markets.(3) The multinationalseed companies will have business reorganization after mergers and acquisitions ofother companies. Mergers and acquisitions of other companies involved in some new businessareas. To achieve better development of the future, the enterprise will have to restructure itsbusinesses.(4) The multinational seed enterprises have a clear international developmentgoal.(5) For any enterprise, innovation is the essential driving force. Scientific andtechnological innovation is vital to seed enterprises.
