In the distribution center, picking is the highest labor-intensive operation and is of highest cost. In order to improve distribution service, reduce response time, and optimize inventory configuration among its national sales network, the shoes manufacturer needs to design and optimize its national logistics network and invest in a new distribution center to strengthen its core competitiveness, and to provide an efficient and effective ’direct-shipment-to-stores’ service to its national outlets across the nation.Due to the changes in business models,(from RDC to direct shipment to ending stores), the picking system of the newly established distribution center has to be adjusted accordingly on the basis of the business’ logistics characteristics so as to support the national outlets’ retailing while keeping a high service level.In this paper, based on the business model of "direct shipment to ending stores", we bring forward a design concept for the eastern China’ distribution, including:1. Analyzing the characteristics of eastern China’s logistics. By analyzing the historical data, we understand the logistics’ characteristic, combining the company’s strategies, the conceptual designing objective will be achieved;2. Analyzing, integrating and optimizing the current warehouse’ resources. After analyzing all the warehouses around the manufacturing base, the current warehouse in the New Area will be redesigned as the new distribution center.3. The conceptual design solutions was explored based on the logistics warehouse building construct and logistics characteristics and rules, which include: layout and material flow analysis, capability design, operations design, demand for the WMS, etc.4. Equipment choosing. According to the characteristics shoes and apparel industry, and those of the program, we put forward a cost-effective equipment selection solution.This research can improve the efficiency of the picking system in the modern distribution center, improve supply chain response time, improve logistics service level, reduce inventory, and speed up inventory.
