Since twentieth century, there are three waves of mergers and acquisitions of global banking sector. The Deutsche Bank and HSBC are two very successful banks which use the cross-border M&A method to become the world first-class commercial banks. During the crucial strategic transformation of China’s macro economy, a large number of outstanding Chinese enterprises go to the world. Under the background of the internationalization of RMB, Chinese banks should learn the advanced experience in the terms of mergers and acquisitions to implement international strategy.From1998, the Chinese banks started to carry on the mergers and acquisitions. This article is going to analysis the motivation and characteristics of M&A. We can see that the commercial bank takes transnational M&A to quickly occupy the local market, to avoid risks, and the implementation of international strategy and achieve the international management goal.This article also carries on the analysis of international strategy of commercial banks. Take ICBC as an example to compare the efficiency of before and after M&A carried by ICBC and make recommendations to the next target M&A market for industrial and commercial bank of China(ICBC). Finally, this article puts forward feasible suggestion on how to carry out effective cross-border mergers and acquisitions of Chinese commercial banks in the global financial market.
