With the improvement of living standards, people’s requirement for food has become higher,not only in the need of delicious food, but also the safety of food. In the last few years, issues offood safety frequently happened all over the world, and with the internationalization of foodtrade, unsafe food is likely to spread to the entire world, causing food safety incidents andresulting in panic to people on food safety issues. The significance of food safety issues havebeen more than the food itself, and has developed into a big problem related to the country’seconomic and social stability. China becomes one of the leading food exporters since itsaccession to WTO. However, the spate of food safety incidents causing huge economic losses toour country, and meanwhile affect the international image of China’s food, or even prevent thestability of our country. In this grim situation, how to enhance the food safety situation of China’sexports then becomes a social problem which needs to be solved urgently.The paper first introduces the background of how the food safety issues arise, andrecapitulates related literature at home and abroad on food safety study. Based on the collectionand collation of2000-2011China-EU trade data, this paper sums up the food trade and safetysituation of China’s exports to EU and focus on the analysis of the reasons which influence thesafety of exported food. Finally, inspired by the food safety management model in Europe andthe United States, targeted countermeasures and suggestions are provided to improve China’sexports of food safety management.
