Study On Baotou To Be The Regional Central City

In the21st century, the world economic globalization and regional economic integration process have been further intensified. The trend of "urban regionalization and regional urbanization" is very significant. Great city circle and metropolitan area are typical examples. Regional central city as the center of the cluster of urban agglomeration resources, and regional and national economy core zone, has become a driving force for urban agglomeration development. With the development of China’s economy, center city will play a major role in the pull of regional economic development and the process of urbanization.This paper uses the theory of urban geography and regional economics to conduct research on development level and structure characteristics of the areas of "Huhhot, Baotou, and Erdos", analyze Baotou’s growth strength to be the regional center city, interpret the characteristics of Baotou development. The primary ratio analysis method is used to discuss whether Baotou will become a regional center city. SWOT analysis method was used to evaluate Baotou city advantages and disadvantages, opportunities and challenges in Baotou’s development. The strategies for building Baotou to be the regional center city were presented, combining with characteristics of regional industry development and urban construction features.The conclusions in this paper are as follows. Considered the area of Baotou in the areas of "Huhhot, Baotou, and Erdos" and the areas of six cities in west region, Baotou city has had the basic conditions to build central city according to its comprehensive index of economic and city scale, comprehensive index of city function, economic gross, and population scale. However, the advantages of Baotou are not obvious over the Huhhot and Erdos. The comprehensive index of industry in Baotou is lower which imply that the city function is relatively simple, and the proportion of industry in national economy, and service is not developed. Therefore, in order to build Baotou as the regional central city, Baotou should pay much attention to advancing the city functions, characters and government function, to adjustment of industrial structure, improving environment, advancing the integration of urban and rural areas, building the city brand, depending on the advantage of the "Golden Triangle" of "Huhhot, Baotou, and Erdos".
