With accelerated economic globalization, economic environment at home and abroad changes deeply and regional economic development faces new changes. Now, a pattern has been formed, featuring Shanghai as a leader, and Jiangsu and Zhejiang developing side by side. As the core city of the Yangtze River delta, Shanghai’s goal is to be a modern international metropolis and international centers for economic, finance, trade and shipping. It brings the great opportunities not only to Shanghai but also to Yangtze River delta. However, the rigid limit of administrative districts and the conflict of economic interests hindered the coordinated development of Yangtze River delta. As an important element to break administrative barriers, traffic plays an important role in the development of regional economy. The regional development history at home and abroad has proved that the improvement of traffic structure and function not only can strengthen the openness of regional economic system, but also can strengthen regional internal and external economic development connection. Thus the regional economic development will develop to a higher level. As the prospect of global economy seems quite bleak, it is highly critical for the Yangtze River Delta cities to solve these problems such as how to maximize labor division and collaboration, complement one another and break the bottleneck so that the economy in China can grow in a fast and sound way. From a global view, this paper summarizes the theories of regional economic development, industrial structure and regional spatial structure, clears up the development process of transport infrastructure and facilities between Shanghai and Taizhou, analyzes the transformation in transportation contact and economic contact of Shanghai and Taizhou in the process of evolution, and then concludes the specific role of transportation in the regional economic development. Based on the above analysis, this paper analyzes the problems in the interactive communication process of Shanghai and Taizhou. At last, based on learning from the advanced experience at home and abroad, this paper puts forward the best path selection. It can be concluded from the analysis of theories and practices that,(1) the improvement of the traffic structure and function not only can strengthen the openness of regional economic system, but also can strengthen regional internal and external economic development contact. As traffic improve gradually, the economic ties and accessibility of Shanghai and Taizhou constantly strengthen.(2) The improvement of the traffic structure and function can effectively promote the transformation and upgrading of the industrial structure. With accelerated traffic, the industrial structure of Shanghai and Taizhou upgrade constantly.(3) Traffic directly influences the direction of regional space development. For the traffic development, the space structure of Shanghai and Taizhou improved gradually. With the analysis of theories and practices, this paper draws a conclusion that there exist many problems in the interactive communication process of Shanghai and Taizhou, which conclude that economic connections need to be cleared and improved; industrial structure is yet to be optimization; Shanghai has not fully played a leading role; network space structure need to be more perfect. Learning from the experience of the metropolis circle at home and abroad, this paper puts forward the best path selection for Shanghai and Taizhou. For Shanghai, it shall maintain its own advantages and strengthen its leading role, improve the service sector, and the connections between Shanghai and other cities in this region shall be enhanced. For Taizhou, it is vital to have Shanghai’s backup before handling globalization problems, establish modern integrated transport networks to strengthen the links with Shanghai and other cities, and play its own advantages. The characteristics of this paper are as follows:first, it researches from the angle of traffic, which is more micro and meticulous. Second, it focuses on bidirectional effect of the core city and the surrounding city to explore their common development path. The chapter is organized as follows:Chapter one is an introduction to the background and meanings of the study, related concepts, methods and framework of the study; Chapter two clears up relevant theories; Chapter three examines the development process of transportation infrastructure of Shanghai and Taizhou; Chapter four investigates how the traffic influent the economic development, industrial structure and space structure; Chapter five puts forward the problems in the interactive communication process of Shanghai and Taizhou and the best path selection for the regional economic development; Chapter six gives a conclusion to this study and raised possible problems needs further studied.
