With the comprehensive construction of transportation infrastructure, economic exchanges between provinces and cities in China are increasingly frequent, and regional development shows significant economic spatial correlation. The report of the Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that the strategy of regional coordinated development should be implemented, and for the first time the strategy of regional coordinated development was upgraded to be the leading strategy of regional development.Transportation construction should take the opportunity of regional coordinated development, rationally allocate transportation resources, and promote the quality, efficiency and power changes of economic development with high-quality and efficient development of transportation. There is a close relationship between the regional economic spatial correlation and transportation.Studying the influence and mechanism of transportation on the regional economic spatial correlation is of great practical significance for guiding the allocation of transportation resources, narrowing regional disparities and achieving regional coordinated development. There are both theoretical and practical values to study the influence and mechanism of transportation on regional economic spatial correlation. However,in the existing domestic and foreign literature, there are few studies on the relationship between regional economic spatial correlation and transportation, and there is no in-depth analysis on the path and mechanism of transportation affecting regional economic spatial correlation. In this paper, the spatial visualization analysis method and spatial autocorrelation analysis tool are used to analyze the characteristics of regional economic spatial correlation, and the factors affecting regional economic spatial correlation are analyzed by QAP analysis method. In QAP analysis, the difference matrix of transport infrastructure network density is used as explanatory variable, and the regional economic spatial correlation matrix is used as dependent variable. It is found that the similar status of transport development will contribute to the spatial correlation of regional economy and generate economic spatial spillovers;by narrowing the gap of transportation resources among regions,we can promote inter-regional economic spatial correlation and promote economic spatial spillover.Next, this paper analyzes the impact and its mechanism of transportation on regional economic spatial correlation through theoretical analysis and empirical test.Since financial network, capital flow, income flow and other capital links are not mostly affected by transportation, the regional economic spatial correlations studied in this paper mainly include 4 kinds: trade correlations, industrial correlations, social correlations and technological correlations. In chapter 4,the theoretical model is constructed, which proves that the reduction of transportation costs can expand economic and trade exchanges and enhance the spatial spillover effect of regional economy. Then, based on the dynamic panel GMM model, using panel data of 31 provinces in China from 1998 to 2017,this paper empirically examines the impact of transportation(taking highway network density as an alternative index)on the economic spatial spillover effect. The main findings are as follows: China's regional economic development has a strong spatial spillover effect, and expressway and ordinary highway will both have a positive role in promoting the spatial spillover effect of economic development, but the role of expressway is more significant;Only in areas with high network density, can highway has a significant impact on economic spatial spillover; The higher the network density in a province, the stronger the economic spatial spillover effect from the surrounding areas would be,but the marginal contribution to economic spatial spillover effect of highway will decrease gradually with transport development;the greater the gap of highway infrastructure between the adjacent areas, the greater the degree of economic imbalance. As chapter 4 studies the impact of transportation on regional economic spatial correlation from a macro perspective. The conclusion shows that transportation can enhance economic spatial spillover effect(economic spatial correlation). Then based on the different influence mechanism of transportation on different ways of correlation, the next of this paper will continue to analyze the influence mechanism from three dimensions: industrial correlation dimension, social correlation dimension and technological correlation dimension.Chapter 5 analyses the influence mechanism of transportation on regional economic spatial correlation from the dimension of industrial and social correlation. In chapter 5,when studying the influence of transportation on population flow, industrial structure and industrial agglomeration, this paper firstly constructs a theoretical model of transportation affecting population flow and industrial structure based on the intermediary effect of factor price, which theoretically proves that the reduction of transportation cost can change the price of labor and land, thus stimulating population flow and industrial restructuring. Then, using the crosssectional data of prefecture-level cities in 2006 and 2013,this paper empirically examines the impact of transportation on labor and land prices, and the indirectly impact on population mobility and industrial structure. After that, using the data of 285 cities at prefecture level from 2002 to 2017,this paper empirically analyzed the impact of transportation on the manufacturing agglomeration through spatial autoregressive model and spatial error model. The empirical results show that the impact of transportation on manufacturing agglomeration level in the eastern region presents an inverted U-shaped trend, while the impact on manufacturing agglomeration level in the central and western regions presents a U-shaped trend.Chapter 6 analyses the impact mechanism of transportation on regional economic spatial correlation from the dimension of technological correlation. At the horizontal spatial level, the "correlation" of technological correlation is mainly represented as knowledge spatial spillover. Therefore,we analyzed the impact of transportation on economic spatial spillover(economic spatial correlation)through knowledge spatial spillover. The results show that knowledge spatial spillover has a positive effect on regional economic spatial spillover, and the effect of knowledge spatial spillover on regional economic spatial spillover is affected by transportation conditions. Finally, based on the analysis of the above research results that how transportation give influence on regional economic spatial correlation, this paper puts forward corresponding policy recommendations:(1)Formulating differentiated regional economic policies;(2)Promoting transportation integration and strengthening the development of transportation in the central and Western regions;(3)Guiding the allocation of transportation resources with overall awareness;(4)Implementing talent strategy to enhance regional competitiveness;(5)Promoting the coordinated development of transportation and industry. The innovations of this paper are as following:(1)A theoretical model of spatial spillover effect that transportation have on regional economy is constructed.By extending the DixitStiglitz model and using the influence of market potential on economic development to represent the economic spatial spillover effect, this paper analyses the impact of transportation on regional economic spatial spillover effect.(2)Based on the intermediary effect of factor prices,a theoretical model of the effect that transportation have on population flow and industrial structure is constructed, and the mechanism path of how transportation give impact on population flow and industrial structure is revealed.(3)Through multi-level linear model which is specially used to analyze the data with hierarchical structure characteristics, this paper analyzed and verified that transportation can influence the spatial correlation of regional economy by means of the knowledge spatial spillover.
