With the rapid development of China’s economy and society, residents of the level of demand for transport services is increasing, the car ownership also increased rapidly. Trucks, buses, taxis, private cars and other basic necessities in people’s daily plays are becoming important roles. With the development of China’s tire industry, tire export volume has steadily improved. However, China’s tire production technology and meridian rates has a high raising in recent years. Currently, the car tires radial rate in Europe, Japan and other developed countries have reached100%, the rate of radial truck tires has been over90%. The gap between China and developed counties in the rate of radial tires was large. By the past10years of efforts, China’s rate of radial tire has been greatly improved by32%from2000to2012of88%.All-steel radial tire is becoming the main products for its flexibility, abrasion resistance, good cushioning performance characteristics. Quality detecting tire factory has become a key issue to tire manufacturers. Traditional detection method is detecting the X-ray image by human eyes. The worker judge the quality level of the tire in accordance with the quality standards. However, this method is too subjective to reflect the quality level of a tire accurately. So detecting defects by computer software to replace traditional method to control the quality of products has become a trend.This paper is mainly divided into three parts, the first part introduces the tire detecting algorithm of tire image, the second part describes the self-developed X-ray images of radial tire defect automatic detection system. In the first part, we summarize some classic methods of defect detecting, and introduce its pros and cons. In the second part, we propose a new method to detect the defects in sidewall area. This defect method is divided into four sections:gray correction, cord extract, morphology process and identification of defects. On the sidewall image, we use its cord structural features to eliminate the impact of the uneven distribution of gray image by filtering algorithm, and then use a classic method to get the binary image. At last, we use different methods to defect different defects. In the third part, according to the standard of tire defects, we complete the architecture study and logic design of X-ray detection software, and we introduce the software functions and operating procedures described in detail. By studying the characteristics of defect detection methods for steel radial tire X-ray image, this paper designed and completed the X-ray image defects automatic detection system. Experimental results show that the detection algorithm has high efficiency to detect defects. The software can improve detection efficiency after applying in factory.
