Passive Optical Network (PON) is an effective solution to cope with the growing needs of high bandwidth long distance data communication in the current situation. Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON), because of its advantage of good compatibility with existing Ethernet devices, easyley technical implementation and the overall lower cost, has been promoted in large-scale commercial applications in access networks, as well progressively expanded to private network of industrial field, such as power PON, railway PON, etc.Compared to home access application, the private network of industry not only has higher request of the reliability, but also has more variable business service interface requirement. For example, the railway interval communication system, needs two ethernet interface, four telephone interface and double PON protection support. As most of the existing EPON ONU SOC design is for home access application and is not flexible enough for industry private network. So the EPON ONU SOPC design scheme is proposed to meet the requirement of industry private network. This paper firstly based on the study of EPON relevant standards, introduces the EPON ONU MAC logical design implementation in detail, and then based on the Zynq platform and ZedBoard, builds the SOPC hardware system. As the ZedBoard don’t contain any optical interface, this paper also introduces the design of a double PON port FMC expansion. Finally, a simple EPON network environment is set up using the OLT of ISOCM5508to test the designed EPON ONU MAC IP core as well as the built whole SOPC hardware platform. The designed ONU is registered correctly and running normally, and the EPON ONU SOPC hardware design goal is reached.
