Visible light communication technology is a new wireless communicationtechnology which is based on the white light LED technology. Visible white LEDwireless optical communication shows several advantages over optical fibercommunication and microwave communication, such as high transmission power, nooccupation of radio spectrum, no electromagnetic interference, no electromagneticradiation, good secrecy and very low energy, etc. The visible light communication cannot only be used in some fields that limit on electromagnetic interference such as:aviation、medical,but also can be used in Intelligent Home Furnishing, intelligenttransportation, indoor positioning, high speed network transmission and the future4Gnetwork. More latent applications are expected. In order to simplifythe electrical routing, to solve the problem of small coverage,and the inability oftransmitting through walls for the source light, a new wireless communication systemwhich is based on the power line and the visible light is designed and demonstratedexperimentally.The system consists of power line communication module, visible lightcommunication module and microprocessor bridging module. Power line modulemainly consists of a power line modem composition based on INT5500chip. Themicroprocessor module comprises a CPLD and a SCM with net interface. The mainfunction of SCM is conversion of the TCP/IP packet into RS232packet. CPLD is usedto code the RS232data packet into custom serial data packet. Visible lightcommunication module is composed of optical transmitter and optical signal receiver.The module contains the LED driver, a receiver with amplifier, filter, and a decisioncircuit. Decoding and the conversion from a custom serial data packet to RS232datapacket is achieved in CPLD in the receiver. Data transmission experiments based on the designed white light LEDcommunication system have been done. Data are transmitted through the power lineand the visible light communication system. The aim for LEDs to be used as lightingand communication source contemporarily is realized.
