The Internet of Vehicles(IOV) has the typical architecture of the Internet of Things(IOT), which is a concrete form that the technology of IOT applies to the Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS). IOV realizes the establishment of efficient "human-vehicle-road" Information Collaborative Communication Platform, to improve transport safety, relieve traffic congestion, reduce air pollution, enhance the comfort of driving. In recent years, despite the well developed information technologies, there are some significant challenges that hinder the rapid development of vehicular networks. On one hand, limited resources of vehicle terminal, including computation, storage, and radio spectrum bandwidth, result in inefficient data processing capability. It is difficult for an individual vehicle to support in-vehicle multimedia entertainment, vehicular social networking, and location-based services. On the other hand, intelligent transport system (ITS) contains vast amounts of data. Massive data acquisition and real-time analysis presents a great challenge for the current ITS system.Cloud computing is a new computing form developed in recent years, which embodies a new concept of information service model. Cloud computing distributes computing tasks in resource pools by virtualization, allowing users to dynamically obtain computing power, storage space and information services on demand. With the development of mobile Internet, the development of Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is in full swing. MCC allows users to access to network services anywhere, anytime without the resource limitations of mobile devices. The convergence of communications and computing is the future direction of communications industry and computing industry. The Internet of Vehicles (IOV) is a distributed system which can provide powerful processing capability for ITS, improve resource utilization, reduce facility costs by sharing the computation and storage resources among all vehicles or servers. Meanwhile, the integration of communications and computing can overcome resource constraints of mobile terminals and improve the experience of accessing to computing power. In this article, we propose to integrate cloud computing and mobile cloud computing into vehicular networks and design cloudlet-based vehicular networks. The proposed three-layer architecture includes a central cloud, a roadside cloud and vehicle terminals. Then we build a model of cloud-based vehicular networks and illustrate potential applications in cloud-based vehicular networks. At last, we study some key technologies in cloud-based vehicular networks, including information distribution technology of IOV, VM resource allocation scheme based on game theory model, virtual machine migration scenarios, and a resource reservation scheme. Results of this study are important in establishing MCC-based vehicular network of our own intellectual property, promoting the development of cross-cutting areas between MCC and ITS, improving services of ITS and so on.
