Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) probe environmental information through wirelesstransmission by a large number of sensor nodes scattered in target area. The sensor, which ispowered by battery, summary perceptual information and then transmit the message toobservers over a wireless channel, but the whole functions of network are affected byrestrictions from battery itself, calculation functions, storage capacity and the communicationrange of the sensor nodes. However, with the rapid advancement of wireless communications, information networks and integrated circuit technology, WSN has also been a rapiddevelopment towards a single, intelligent, miniaturized direction going forward. When WSNs have been widely used in many applications, its information security haspeople paid more attention to its information security. As an important way to secure data, keymanagement system has become the focus of study, especially in defense, military, transportation and aviation. This paper introduces research and development of sensor networkkey management, encryption algorithm classification, identity-based encryption algorithms onelliptic curves, and the Heterogeneous Sensor Networks (HSNs). Compared with traditionalsensor networks, HSNs have different structure in presence of nodes. In HSNs, there are a small number of high performance nodes which for gatheringsensor nodes and then form a cluster. After that, cluster head collect and fuse the informationfrom sensor nodes and then forward to the base station. Also, high-performance node canperform complex calculations which make the public key cryptography can be used in theHSNs key management schemes. On this basis, this paper shows an identity-based keymanagement scheme, including the establishment of various keys in detail, and a description ofthe key generation, distribution, add, update, and delete. The scheme which is proposed hasbetter performance compared with the existing schemes in connectivity, survivability and therequirements for storage, computing and communications.\According to theory test andanalysis, this key management system is most suitable for a large-scale wireless sensornetworks.
