Vegetables are the necessities of life. With the development of social economy and the improvement of people’s living standards, the demand for vegetables is increasing. Therefore, modern vegetable industry of our country has entered a period of rapid development, making it the second largest economic pillars in the agricultural sector. However, due to the excessive pursuit of production and economic efficiency, a variety of vegetable safety issues occurred in recent years, so people gradually lost confidence to the vegetable quality, which seriously affected the development of vegetable industry. In order to ensure safety quality of vegetable product, our country established vegetable quality assurance system and institution, still in the early stages. Although regulatory regime has been established and many scholars have studied the relevant vegetable quality traceability models and methods, none of the traceability system can go deep into the vegetable growth environment and growth process. Moreover, traceability means basically use the texts or pictures and none is able to show the information of vegetable growth aspects directly in real time. As a result, the traceability information of vegetable quality safety is still very limited.Aiming at this problem, the article implements a video traceability system, which combined text, image, and video information and whose carriers are QR Code two-dimensional codes, computers, cell phones and websites. Related information is recorded according to the various stages of vegetable growth cycle, and the information files of vegetable growth environment and growth process are established, ensuring the traceability of vegetable growth. The quality traceability "from farm to fork " is reached ultimately, which provides an effective means for real-time query of vegetable quality information.Based on a vegetable industry demonstration zone (referred to as "demonstration zone") in Hannan district, Wuhan city, the system focuses on the quality traceability of vegetable growth environment and growth process and builds vegetable quality video traceability system. The article conducts the system analysis and design first in accordance with the actual situation, and completed the hardware facilities platform building of demonstration zone remote video surveillance. Then it completed the development of the entire system based on the demand for the real-time record of vegetable growth information. Video traceability system consists of three parts. Firstly, a computer program (C#language) codes the critical information of vegetable growth environment and growth process to generate the QR Code two-dimensional code information. Secondly, the label is sent to consumers with vegetables and consumers conduct image preprocessing, automatic identification and information decoding through the Android mobile client software (Java language). Finally, after acquiring the critical information, consumers can also choose to view the detail information of vegetable growth that provided by network background (C#language). In the whole process, the computer terminal also can manage the video surveillance platform, and the mobile terminal can view video information in real time or replay video via the camera serial number in the detailed information, and the network terminal also can provides video information in the web version.The traceability system has been put into use in the demonstration zone. The production of practice has proved that video surveillance based vegetable quality traceability system is feasible. The system is of important theoretical and realistic significance in building vegetable quality traceability system for modern vegetable industry mode, and plays an important role in improving the quality and safety of vegetables. Besides, it makes a good demonstration for the research work of bringing video surveillance technology into agricultural product quality traceability.
