One of the main scenarios of Vehicular Ad-hoc network (VANET) currently is theIntelligent Transportation System(ITS). ITS uses information and communicationtechnologies to support safe and efficient transportation of goods and people. ITS uses anopen architecture to make it compatible with a variety of different technical standards run onit. The reference structure of ITS station is a hierarchical structure similar to the OSI OpenSystems Interconnection structure. There are application module, functional layer module, network&transport layer module, the access layer module, management module and securitymodule. Each module has its own responsibilities. In order to complete some functionality ofthe ITS station, Some modules need to cooperate. The reference structure also defines anumber of inter-module communication interfaces. Vanet has many features that are differentfrom traditional wireless networks, such as high-speed node movement and rapidly changingnetwork topology. Herein many routing protocols widely used in traditional wireless networksdisplay poor performance in VANET. As vehicular network developing, there are many newrouting algorithms and protocols that are designed and implemented according to those newfeatures and they could be divided into five categories. They are topology-based routing,location-based routing, movement-based routing, map-based routing, and traffic awarenessbased routing. In order to model the process of vanet communication to do some research andanalyze it, there are generally two modeling methods: mathematical method and simulationmethod. Both methods have its advantage and disadvantage. In order to study the impact ofdifferent routing process on vanet performance, we need to develop a hybrid modelingmethod by combining mathematical and simulation method to establish a new hybrid modelof vanet communication process. This hybrid model is properly abstracted and differentrouting processes are easy to be implement on it. Changes of network status can be observedwhen the system parameters are changing. It’s more accurate then the mathematical modeland can describe the complex process like the packet-switching process in vanet. Base on thehybrid model, we build up the vanet communication simulation system. Then extract the basic rules of the five routing protocols and implement them. At last, we do many comparativeexperiments of the five routing protocols and analyze their performance according to theexperiment results.
