News headline is the soul of news discourse. It condenses the whole content and plays an important role in leading and directing readers to comprehend the news. As the network news has increasingly become a primary means for acceptors to obtain news and a type of network information which engenders great influence, network news headlines have attracted more attention than ever. The choice of different language expressions in news headlines now demonstrates different perspectives and orientations in news reporting and reflects viewpoints of the media.Positive discourse analysis (PDA), as a supplement to critical discourse analysis (CDA), analyzes the discourse from the constructive perspective and aims to promote the development of harmonious society through discourse analysis. The Appraisal Theory is a system of appraisal resources which is employed to analyze the viewpoint, attitude and stance of language users. This thesis is intended to analyze the civil news headlines on the Internet within the framework of the appraisal theory from the perspective of positive discourse analysis. It compares the civil news headlines which report the same events from official news websites and commercial news websites so as to explore different distributions in appraisal resources which help to deal with social conflicts positively for harmonious environment. All in all, this thesis is an attempt which applies the Appraisal Theory to PDA of civil news headlines on the Internet. It is not profound and complete, but it can open a new perspective for the analysis of network news headlines and play an supplementary role in CDA.
