| China News Award is the top award in news of the year in China. Since 1990, it has now been the 24th session to hold where the award-winning news are characterized by novel perspective and unique reporting, which has been highlighted in the field of journalism and communication. Serving as part of the news discourse, headlines are closely related to the news text, context and rhetoric. Application of metaphor in news headlines brings new perspectives and practice for journalism and communication. News discourse in the process of the medium and social development are being changed, thus, the role of metaphor in news discourse attract much more attention from people. Metaphor is not only regarded as a technique for literature modifier, but also exists in all kinds of discourse, whose practice is closely related to social and historical context.Based on the news headlines from China News Award, the author takes the news and commentary headlines as the research object, among which 1291 pieces are news and 591 are comments out of a total of 5267 pieces of awarded news in all previous sessions. Taking conceptual metaphor theory in the book Metaphors We Live By of the Lakoff and Johnson into consideration, the author describes the metaphorical phenomenon in the news headlines and tries to analyze on a basis of description of the metaphor phenomenon with a combination of the qualitative and quantitative methods.With the method of discourse analysis, this thesis focuses on describing and analyzing the structural metaphor such metaphor about "war" , "drama", "tour" and orientational metaphors such as metaphor about "up or down" and ontological metaphor such as metaphor about "container" and "human" metaphor. It can be found that headline metaphor in news discourse has many functions in aspects such as social reality, symbolism, communication, culture and corresponding structure. |
