In recent years,as the influence of the global economic crisis as well as the UnitedStates and the European Union countries debt crisis, the development of nationaleconomic of the western world have taken a fall. The economic of China and theinfluence in the world are all gradually increasing. In this context, China’s attentionfrom the western media will be inevitably increased. How the western mediaconstruct the image of China and what kind of China’s image is shaped have become aproblem we have to focus on naturally. Considering Newsweek gains the mostrewards for its commentary in the American political weekly journal and is famousfor its free view at the same time, so it is the first choice of the research. This thesis makes quantitative analysis on252articles referring to China fromNewsweek firstly and selects two articles which are more representative for textanalysis, then we can gain the three levels of the media framework. At the end of thepaper I discuss the reasons how the media framework of Newsweek referring to Chinaforms and put forward some Suggestions in order to improve the image of China inthe international community as well as in the foreign media. This article is divided intosix parts: the first part is introduction, in this part I introduce the purpose of theresearch, the research objects and research achievements in china and abroad,on thebasis of this I put forward the process and scheme of research of the paper. Thesecond part is the first chapter, this chapter adopt the quantitative analysis method, firstly I retrieval articles with “China” in LexisNexis database and get252textsthrough further selecting. Then I quantify the texts according to the amount andfrequency of the reports, the authors, issues of the reports. The second chapter is thecritical analysis of articles of Newsweek, in this chapter, I select two articles whichare more representative for text analysis.I use the method of critical discourse analysis(CDA) in the analysis of the text, the purpose of this is to probe into the formation offramework preliminarily from the production to processing of the text.Political and economic factors of the social determine the formation of the media framework, andespecially the discourse practice and social production practice of critical discourseanalysis explore the production of the text from the aspects of social political andeconomic. The third chapter is the construction and formation of framework ofNewsweek referring to China. Through quantitative analysis and critical discourseanalysis of the text of the first two chapters, which can help us to get the high-levelframework which is given priority to the political issues, the middle-level frameworkwith tendency of predominantly negative and bias as while as strong ideologicalwords expression in the coverages of Newsweek referring to China. The fourth chapter“the reasons why the formation of media framework of Newsweek referring toChina and the measures should China adopt”, this chapter analyzes the the causesof the formation of the framework of Newsweek and puts forward some Suggestionson how to improve China’s own image. The sixth part “Summary” reviews theresearch achievements of this paper and point out the deficiencies of this study andthe future research directions. The discourse analysis of news text can reveal the ideological content which hiddenbehind the news and the tendency of the individual of news producers, and thesefactors determine the construction and formation of media framework. So the researchof content analysis is so helpful to explore the formation of the media framework.Inhere, I abandoned the orientation of “discusses structure”analysis which came up byPan Zhong dang and Kosicki, and preferred the critical discourse analysis which ismore comprehensive and systematic to the text analysis of English news reports, thisis never found in the literatures which exploring the construction and the formation offramework in past research.
