The column of steel ball has a very wide range of applications in the field of machinery. As the rapid development of industrial modernization and revitalization of the modern defense industry, the accuracy of the size is required higher and higher. The column of steel ball is one of the key parts of the connection. For the purpose to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the steel ball size detection for modern production, based on summary of the domestic and international detection technology for steel ball’s diameter, Designed and developed steel ball’s diameter size measurement and grading equipment based on CCD image detection and processing automatic. The system includes image acquisition and processing system DSP2812automatic control system design, mechanical arm and steel ball automatically queuing mechanical systems, etc.The system uses image acquisition and image processing to complete the columnar of steel ball size detection. The paper uses Sobel、Prewitt、Canny and Gauss-Laplace for experimental validation, mainly the Sobel, in accordance with its optimized edge extraction algorithm of image processing to divide image, and get characteristic parameters of the image edge. With the edge information and the processing of the columnar of steel ball’s characteristic parameters to obtain ball’s diameter size classification information, and complete classification of the steel ball.The system uses PC as basic platform of computer software, fully under help of powerful digital image data processing module of LabVIEW software platform to demonstrate the powerful advantage of LabVIEW graphical programming and build diameter size detection system of the steel ball’s image processing, communication and control system. Ball’s detection system experimental test shows that, in full compliance with the design requirements. This system has the advantage of strong operability, friendly interface to meet the needs of real-time testing and production automation.
