After the rapid development of communication technology in recent years, Power Line Communication (PLC) technology is formally entering our life in the form of consumer products. Because of its high cost-effectiveness and good safety, PLC has become a research hotspot. However, power lines are not designed for communications and they are inherently not a favorable transmission medium, which limited the capacity of PLC transmission channel. Therefore, the design of channel assignment schemes to achieve more efficient transmission emerges as a vital issue. In this paper, we focus on the channel allocation techniques in PLC networks, and achieved the following results:(1) First, we analyze a PLC network and its system structure. Then we define the logical structure of the PLC network and develop a simulation model to evaluate the channel allocation algorithm. The simulation model is implemented in the NS-3network simulator.(2) The disturbances can eminently impact the performance of channel allocation algorithm. To improve the simulation accuracy, the properties of noise scenario is analyzed, with a model developed. Simulation results show that the model can genuinely represent how the channel capacity is affected by interference in the real world.(3) A static channel allocation algorithm based on linear optimization was proposed. The algorithm assigns channels based on the model of PLC network to achieve maximum fairness. Simulation results show that network utilization is84%in scenario with fixed topology and stable flow.(4) To deal with the linear-optimization-based static channel allocation algorithms’ inability to achieve the maximum throughput in scenarioo with bursty traffic, we propose a network-state-aware dynamic channel allocation scheme, in which the central base station obtain necessary information from other stations during reservation period, then assign channels based on the information to achieve maximum network utilization. Simulation results show that network utilization is88%in network with bursty traffic. Both algorithms presented in this paper obtain expected results in target network scenario. Higher network utilization was achieved while the network stability guaranteed.
