In recent years, varies of high strength, high modulus, high performance fibers have been created in chunks with all kinds of new fiber processing techniques.. In order to monitor the spinning fiber performance in the spinning process, it should be much important to measure fiber diameter and temperature online, with which the precise controlling for fiber higher order structures as well as fiber-final performance could be promised. Online measurement of fiber diameter and temperature, together with the spinning dynamics research, has played important roles in the manufacturing fiber with high quality.Online measurement should adopt the noncontact techniques to avoid disturbing the spinning line. However, present instruments for online measurement of fiber diameter and temperature sometimes showed different limitations, such as object must be contacted to measure, complicated to operate, expensive, diameter and temperature cannot be measured at the same time and so on.In this paper, a novel online measurement device for fiber diameter and temperature has been designed. The main contents of this paper were list as following:1) Hardware design. The hardware mainly consisted of laser sensor for diameter measurement, infrared temperature sensor, data acquisition card and PC. The laser sensor has been selected as Keyence(?)IB-001, including a receiver and a transmitter. The infrared temperature sensor has adopted Optris(?) CSmicro LT while the data acquisition card was IOtech(?) Personal Daq/3000Series, which could transfer the analog signal produced by laser senor and thermo sensor to digital signal, and input it to the computer via the USB interface. 2) Software design. The software that consists of multiple sub-modules written by Lab VIEW, which could call the data form data acquisition card using Call Library Function Node.3) Calibration. Due to the signals of those devices could not report the temperature and diameter of fibers directly, the measurement results should be calibrated. The calibration has been performed in the computer interface through the calibration curves of measurement data with respect to accurate values. Application of the calibrated instrument. The online measurement results were then compared with predictions made with mathematical models for melt spinning; the measurements of temperature were also compared with the measurements of infrared thermography. It has been proved that the online temperature measurement could promise high-speed and highly reliable.
