Navy of the world’s rapid growth, coupled with the constant expansion of marineexploitation, keep bringing new challenges to the field of underwater target detecting.Underwater laser technology has been widely applied since the discovery of the underwatertransmission window between blue and green light. As an underwater image acquiringequipment, underwater laser system can be integrated into the vision system of AUVs toassist in negotiating. AUVs can get abundant knowledge of targets-such as type, distance anddirection-by real-time image processing, which gives the research of underwater laser imageprocessing technology great significance.This article shows the design of a control and display platform, which was based on acertain underwater laser system and aimed at developing underwater laser image processingalgorithms. Meanwhile, the platform has the potential to work without its ship unit, so that itcould be fitted in AUVs through modification. The platform takes a PC, an embeddedprocessor and the underwater laser system as a whole, using the embedded processor tocontrol the underwater laser system and the PC to display real-time images. In thecommunication unit of the platform, network interface and USB interface make data floatbetween the hardware. To achieve this, a USB client drive for the underwater laser system inVxWorks system was accomplished. By making use of VxWorks’s multitask environment, acontrol task is established in the embedded system and a programmatic interface is left forfurther development of image processing algorithms. On the PC, a user-friendly interface isprovided for researchers to control the platform on board.It is worthwhile to note that the platform is designed for the research of automaticintelligent control method of underwater laser system. Provided corresponding controlalgorithms, the underwater laser system could be manipulated only by the embedded system,which makes it possible to fit them in an AUV.
