Finery is an important tool of TV show host’s paralanguage communication. The past studies on TV presenter’s finery were quite common, but the contents were relatively simple, basically introduced some experience about the host how to dressed himself appropriately and beautifully. Of course, well dressed is the basic goal of TV host’s clothing behavior. But as finery is a kind of symbol, the effectiveness that the host’s dress can achieve is far from being recognized. This topic attempts to introduce the basic principle of semiotics into host’s clothing research, establish the theory frame of finery research, enhance the theory of depth on host’s study, and to provide the theoretical basis for the practice of TV show host’s paralanguage communication.Finery is a special kind of symbol. From the source of symbol carrier, we found finery was artificially created as a combination of substance and symbol, neither a pure substance, nor pure symbol. And from the bond between signified and signifier, finery symbol is a kind of presentational symbol, rather than discursive symbol. There are quite a lot of similarities between finery symbol and art symbol. Like language, finery symbol is the combination of signified and signifier. The elements of finery, such as color, material, design, pattern, the overall style, wearing form and so on, which conveys various meanings, are able to perceive by people. Audience can read out many things from what the host wears.Compared with people’s daily dress, the TV show host’s finery has more distinct symbol properties and more typical symbolic function. That is because the TV show host’s finery is more likely to attract the attention of a large audience. And the audience tend to think it make sense. In addition to the utility function of cover body and keep out the cold, the dress of TV presenter also has some symbolic functions, such as aesthetic value, etiquette, identification and symbolism. The implementation goes through three stages. First, the generation of the meaning. Second, the transformation of the meaning. And then, the realization of the meaning. There are many factors play a role during all the there stages. That is the reason why the audience’s understanding of the same finery symbols may not be matched with the meaning the host’s intended to express. Sometimes the host’s finery symbols can not finish the process completely, because the audience did not noticed the host’s dress, or did not think it does make sense.
