The college social science journals provide a platform to present the academicachievements in the universities and they have multiple functions such as exchangingacademic ideas and spreading advanced culture. China’s university journal could date back toover100years ago when Dongwu Monthly was founded in1906. The long history has left usvaluable intellectual property and wisdom and ideas. However, in the meantime, manyproblems still remain to be solved. In view of this, the Ministry of Education has successivelyinitiated the Famous Brand Column Project and Famous Brand Publication Project in2003and2004in order to improve our university journals which are now still “over-inclusive,small, loosely-correlated and weak”, and enable these journals to continue growing andbecome stronger, thus realizing the grand objective of developing them into a domesticfirst-class and world famous brand.In this study, document analysis, content analysis and contrastive analysis are used toinvestigate and analyze the40journals selected in the Famous Brand Column Project in termsof their development status, academic influence, editing and publishing efficiency and editingand communication features. Based on a systematic combing of the history of China collegesocial science journals, we integrate and analyze in detail their current situation and carry outa quantitative statistical analysis which props up the research conclusions. As an importantstrategic project with specific objectives, clear process and highlighted significance, theconstruction of famous brand columns&publication has produced widespread socialinfluence and played a good exemplary role. After the journals are rated as famous columns,their academic influence has remarkably increased due to the distinguishing features of thecolumn setup and the refined and diversified column names. At the same time, thanks to themutual promotion between the universities and the journals&columns, as well as to theinteraction between the journals and columns, the famous brand columns&publication hasalso clearly promoted the development of a large number of journals and characteristiccolumns in non-key universities and enabled them to be included in the famous publications or columns, thus attracting attention and gaining a favorable reception from both the academiccircle and the society.According to the conclusions, this study puts forward some pertinent suggestions for thefuture development of the social science journals in universities. Only by jointly takingmultiple measures such as adhering to the quality as the core, bringing forth new ideas for thecommunication strategies, improving the knowledge level of the editors, realizing amulti-platform cooperation and moving towards specialization, can we create a better futurefor the social science journals in our universities and realize the strategic goal of “becomingspecialized, characteristic, large and strong” at an early date.
