The importance of culturaland creative industries is manifested not only in the economic value, but moreimportantly, in social development and guiding the target audiences’ core values.Museum, as a showcase of culture and art and a symbol of cultural developmentdegree in the region, has drawn more and more attention in recent years. With therapid economic growth and development of modern and contemporary art, themuseum enterprise in China has made enormous progress. As an importantcomponent of the museum system, Character Memorial plays an important role incommemorating, researching and promoting remarkable deeds of historical figuresand cultural values. Moreover, it has responsibilities to show the public the historicaland cultural heritage and convey the spirit of history and culture.According to the statistics of2011National Museums Directory, our nation has2650museums, including590Character Memorials, which contain173ancientCharacter Memorials. Those memorials are of different ownership and their operationconditions are various. In this thesis, the auther selects Meng Haoran Memorial inXiangyang City, Hubei Province as research object, in-depth understanding all aspectsof its use of funds, organizational structure, personnel selection, management methodsby personally involving in the transfer of management right, building refurbishmentand reoperation of memorial. Linking theories with reality, the thesis attempts toanalyze the path-choices of shifting operation mode from public to private and theirpros and cons. The study proved that, to get considerable progress and development inChinese museum industry, policies and funds from all levels of government isimportant but not enough, and investments from private economy are of vitalimportance. Only if public and private museums are encouraged same time, andsmall-sized museums with rich character features and local characteristics like MengHaoran Memorial are well developed, can really make more popular in public and receiving profound development.The thesis researches five respects. The first chapter is about status quo ofnational character memorials and observing their common problems. The secondchapter is introducing the case of Meng Haoran Memorial, generally understanding itshistory and changes before and after the transfer of operational right. The thirdchapter stresses on advantages and problems Meng Haoran Memorial has after itsreoperation, and what changes can benefit or hinder its development in shiftingprocess. Combined with the previous analysis, the fourth chapter puts forwardresponse measures that Meng Haoran Memorial should be taken. The final chapter isthe conclusion of this case and its enlightment to other character memorial across thecountry.
