High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) ranks in the main streams of thenew radar systems. In this paper it will be established a modeling and simulation offorecast HFSWR power coverage. The software design will be accomplished if it oncecombined with the simulation algorithm and the Graphical User Interface (GUI). TheHFSWR power coverage is related to the factors like ground-wave propagationcharacteristics and clutter interference etc., It has been one of the most importantsubjects in the theoretical system to establish simulation models of the surface wavepropagation, target echo, clutter interference (environmental noise and sea clutters) andSNR of HFSWR on the basis of HFSWR detection mechanism and meanwhile itprovides a theoretical foundation for further processing. Taking the real-time data intoaccount, HFSWR forecast power coverage can provide the range of its currentcircumstance together with its system parameter instantly. At the same time, the resultscan serve as a database backbone for further system performance evaluation and systemparameter adjustment.In this paper, simulation analysis focuses on main factors of HFSWR coverage andaims at forming simulation models eventually. Based on Rotheram’s work, a formula isderived for the electric field strength-distance variations of surface wave in the freespace. The electric field strength formula is hopeful to be improved through the forwardresearch progress on integration of effective surface impedance of rough sea surface, thefield strength calculation program in order to make it suitable for ground wave acrossover a rough sea. Furthermore, the echo power calculation model derived from thesearch on basic transmission loss of HFSWR. The HFSWR is mainly affected by clutterinterferences are environmental noise and sea clutters, so the generating principle andcharacteristics of first-order and second-order sea clutters are analyzed and simulationmodels are taking its shape. Then, the SNR model for calculating can be summed up interms of ground-wave propagation and clutter interference models by using the radarequation and its related HFSWR characteristics. Combined with radar system SNR ofthe detection threshold, modeling and simulation will come into being as a result of theHFSWR forest power coverage in the end.On the basis of the above theories, HFSWR propagation analysis software andpower range forecast software were designed. The HFSWR propagation analysissoftware provides the data of SNR and the result of power range forcast for system. Theother one is written in the C#language, which provides graphical user interface (GUI)combined with the function of power range forecast to obtain stronger portability and good maintainability.
