With the rapid development of network information technology, the demand forinformation security is increasing. Obtaining, edit and distribution of multimedia informationis more and more convenient, which brings convenience to people, but also brings greatchallenges to the traditional information security. Conventional information encryptiontechnology can only play a protective role in the information transmission process, once theencrypted information transfer to the authorized receivers, it must be decoded to the plaintextstate, at this time the information completely losts protection. Therefore, traditionalencryption technology has been unable to meet the growing security needs. Data hidingtechnology is developed in this background, and now has become a hot research topic in thefield of information security. Due to the characteristics of its information lossless, reversibledata hiding has become one of the great potential branches in the field of information hiding.Reversible information hiding techniques can be applied in areas such as medicine, law, andthere is no essential difference between it and the general data hiding, however, reversibledata hiding can completely restore the original carrier after secret data extraction.This paper takes simple grayscale images as research object, and takes reversibleinformation hiding based on histogram modification as research content. First we describe thebackground and significance, basic concepts, basic principle, system model, generalclassification, and basic characteristics of information hiding, and research and analysis of thedevelopment situation of information hiding in depth. And then we introduce the basicconcepts of reversible data hiding, compares the spatial domain reversible information hiding,the transform domain reversible information hiding and compression domain reversible datahiding, and analysis the future research and development of reversible data hiding. Afteranalysing two histogram adjustment technique,gray histogram modification and differencehistogram modification, we propose a new reversible information hiding algorithm based onpixel classification. Pixels are divided into two class according to their values, the safe classwhich embedding data through difference histogram modification, and unsafe class whichembedding data through gray histogram modification. The algorithm is available to bothsmooth image and non-smooth image in which other reversible data hiding algorithm hardlyembed data. Experimental results show that the algorithm provides high embedding capacityand low image degradation. The algorithm can apply to both general grayscale image datahiding, also the medical field image data hiding, so it has a certain practical significance.
