Network security has become increasingly important along with the rapiddevelopment of computer networks and the management and monitoring of networkinformation play an important role in all fields of society. In order to ensure the soundoperation of the network, it is necessary to put forward effective measures to guaranteenetwork security. Nowadays,LAN is the most widely used basic network, and manycompanies and institutions employ LAN to share, transmit and store a great deal of theirimportant information. Therefore, the LAN security has become a great concern andpriority for them and LAN managers are supposed to work out effective solution to dealwith various problems which occur in the LAN.Monitoring technology is one of the effective measures for the management oflocal area networks and ensures network security. Nagios is an open-source monitoringtool deployed in the Linux environment, and it can effectively monitors the specificWindows hosts or servers, switches, routers and other network settings in the Linuxenvironment, the exchange of data between the external network and LAN host as wellas specific service monitoring. Nagios has a good compatibility and scalability.Based on the research of Nagios, the study of this thesis focuses on Nagios’ pluginextensions, customized designs, configurations management, LAN monitoring anddeployment. Firstly, the research has been done on Nagios’ monitoring principle, theevent mechanism and plug-in technology; Secondly, the study is about LAN Scenesettings, which leads to the need for LAN monitoring. Nagios has been deployed inspecific LAN and its deployment and configuration management has been studied. ThenNagios’ monitoring of objects in local area network, server monitoring, alerting service,BT traffic monitoring are analyzed, including monitoring design of all aspects involved,CPU load monitoring; completion of the traffic monitoring plug, and the Windows BTtraffic monitoring and alarm service when exception occurs. Finally, the function of thelocal area network monitoring platform is tested, including the monitoring of CPU loadof the server in the LAN environment, alarming when exception occurs; the BT trafficstatistics and analysis. The construction of the local area network monitoring platform is finally completed and specific LAN monitoring is realized.A lot of open-source tools have their own limitations and their Designing arerelatively low, and thus cannot meet the needs of the Internet age. Therefore, this studyon Nagios LAN monitoring platform is supposed provide certain reference to thesecurity construction of of the local area network, and also prove the importance andpracticality of Nagios’ powerful scalability and monitoring capability in networkmonitoring.
