Millimeter wave devices are widely applied in these fields such as radarcommunication system, guidance system, radio astronomy and so on. Using frequencymultiplier is an effective method to obtain high frequency band and reduce the oscillatorsource’s output frequency in millimeter wave signal source. Super-heterodyne receiveris an important component used in modern communications system, and the mixer is thekey part of the super-heterodyne receiver. The harmonic mixer’s application inmillimeter wave band can effectively solve these problems such as the difficulty indesigning local oscillator at the same band. The millimeter-wave frequency multipliers,harmonic mixers have significant scientific value and broad application prospects.In this paper the author presents the design of3mm band harmonic mixer anddoubler. The simulation design of3mm band harmonic mixer and doubler is completedin Ansoft HFSS and Agilent ADS software platform. Both of the two designs use theprobe transition structure. The core device of frequency doubler and harmonic mixer isa single varactor diode and an anti-parallel diode. The frequency multiplier andharmonic mixer’s passive parts (probe transition, filter, matching structure) aresimulated and optimized in the software of HFSS. At last, the author completed thesimulation and optimization of frequency doubler and harmonic mixer’s performance bycombining with ADS’s circuit simulation and HFSS’s three-dimensional fieldsimulation.Finally the author tests the3mm band doubler and harmonic mixers. According tothe test results, for the3mm band harmonic mixer, When RF frequency is80~100GHz,LO frequency is40GHz,input power is15dBm. The best conversion loss is10.9dB, when the frequency doubler’s output frequency is100GHz~108GHz; themaximum output power is4.1dBm. This study plays a positive role in promoting thedevelopment of the W-band frequency doubler and harmonic mixer.
