In recent years, people pay much more attention to the Low-Carbon Economics.It has been the global goal that improving the efficency of energy usage, reducingpolution and emission of CO2. In order to achieve this goal, it needs the help of thesmart appliances and the smart management system from the technical perspective,besides the policy issue. The emergence of Domestic Intelligent Space combine thesmart appliances and smart management system together. This paper introduces thecontext-aware and device web service into the domestic environment based on theexisted research of Domestic Intelligent Space, and designs a new model for HomeEnergy Management System(HEMS).This paper designs the system based on two aspects: control and intelligence.Control means controlling the domestic appliance, including thehigh-configuration devices which have operation system installed andlow-configuration devices which have no operation system inside. Because of theexisting of variety of appliances in home environment, how the heterogeneous devicesare managed and controlled has became a big chanllenge to researchers. This paperbrings a new concept----Group Proxy Device to achieve a unified control toward thedomestic devices. Via this device, the traditional appliances could be recognized andcontrolled by high-level software system. Moreover, this paper designed a new kindof device function description language----Device Instruction Description Languageto avoid the reconstruction of the control system when adding new kind of traditionalappliances into current system. The group proxy could recognize new devices byparsing the DIDL files and add them during run-time.Intelligence here is context-awareness, it means that the energy management system could perform reasoning and make judgement of current device working statusor living environment condition according to the collected information. In energymanagement system, there are two primary steps for reasoning: context-reasoning andservice invocation-reasoning. The raw data collected from devices or sensors needs tobe formatted and converted to hign-level context-information. Then the informationwould go into the reasoning-engine to generate the final judgement. As soon ascomputer gets the result, it would know if it is proper to call some services or not.Because of the arising concern of home safety, this paper suggested a new moduleworking with service invocation module, the emergency operation module. With thismodule, the system would know how to deal with some situations when theinvocation of device’s services is unsuccessful.At last, this paper comes up with a implementation of HEMS. This systemcontains the prototype of the hign-configuration appliance and the group proxy device.Internal DPWS module for domestic devices are based on WS4D-JMEDS library. Inthe server part, the DPWS module and reasoning module are developed onWS4D-Axis2library and Jess engine.Finally, the HEMS enables the monitoring and control of domestic devices. It canpublish commands via the unified interfaces and provide intelligent services for usersin the perspective of home safety and energy saving without any manual intervention.
