Wireless sensor network is a cross-product technology combining sensor technology, wireless communication technology, embedded computing technology of cooperation and it has been widely used in many fields in recent years. The design of wireless sensor network system faces many challenges, one of the most important challenges is how to improve the utilization of network energy resources, because energy limited is one of the innate limiting factors of wireless sensor networks. Mobile robot technology is an new disciplines which has many similarities with the wireless sensor networks, such as they both have wireless communication capabilities and they all have independent power supply.Wireless sensor networks and mobile robot both has their own advantages and characteristics. If combine them together and constructure a new system, the new system will performance better than both of them. The new system combining by Wireless sensor networks with mobile robots make use of their advantages and characteristics, at the same time overcome each other’s limitations. For example, the rich energy resources of the mobile robot can make up for the defects of the limited energy resources in wireless sensor networks, and greatly extend the life cycle of wireless sensor networks; flexible mobility features of the mobile robots can optimize the topology structure of wireless sensor network; and the rich resources sensory perception of wireless sensor networks could extends the perceive space of mobile robots.This article describes the characteristics and advantages of the wireless sensor networks and mobile robots, and state the possibility and necessity of the integrate of them. And design a new new system which combine wireless sensor networks with mobile robots. In this system,there are a plurality of mobile robots play as relay nodes in wireless sensor network. The mobile robots share the forwarding tasks for sensor nodes to extend the survival time of the entire wireless sensor network. And this mobile robots will move as the random mobility based on limited scope. This means that every mobile robots is defined to walk in a certain area, thus avoiding the situation of many mobile robots gathered in a same area.Secondly, we design the algorithm MR-WSN for the system of wireless sensor network based on mobile robots. In the algorithm, mobile robots need to play cluster head role to responsible for collecting and processing data as well as transfers the data to the sink node. The algorithm greatly reduces the energy consumption of sensor nodes in the wireless sensor network, at the same time greatly extend the survival time of the entire wireless sensor network. In addition, the algorithm is designed for the wireless sensor in which nodes deployed sparsely, and because of this the algorithm is suit for the field like environmental monitoring which does not require sensor nodes deployed intensively in the monitoring area.Finally, we simulated the algorithm MR-WSN in NS-2simulation platform. The simulation results shows that the algorithm have greatly reduce the latency of network, and at the same time, the algorithm have improved the performance of wireless sensor networks.
