Nowadays, taking photos has become an important part of traveling, meetings, andother activities for normal users, so that there is a rapid increase for the digital photosfamily members made. Therefore, the large amount of photos has led to an urgentdemand for more effective photo management and retrieval technology. Photographicimages are different from other categories of image. People not only care about thecontent of family digital photos, and also concerned about rich context informationmore, such as to capture the memory of a specific event, to share a moment with others,etc. At the same time, users usually share or retrieval images according to semanticmore. So, the traditional keyword-based retrieval and content-based retrievaltechnologies can not meet the user’s need well. Consequently, semantic-basedannotation and retrieval have been concerned more and more.On the basis of the analysis and summary of existing research, this paperdedicated to the research and development of Photo’s annotation and retrieval systemBased on Semantic. The purpose is to make user manage and retrieve digital photosquickly and efficiently. Because the use of ontology makes photo annotationinformation more standardized and structurized, so the annotation and retrieval bothbased on semantic is realized through the ontology technology. In this study, The firstthing is to build family photo domain ontology. Then, design and realize the photoannotation system.. Finally, this study will realize the retrieval family photo on semanticby using the domain ontology. The main contributions of this paper are as follows:1. This paper researches the method of constructing ontology both at home andabroad, and using the prototype seven steps to photograph the domain ontologymodeling.2. Detailed analysis and summarizes the photo semantic extraction method both athome and abroad. In the domain ontology foundation, this paper combined withautomatic and semi-automatic semantic annotation technologies to implement a photoannotation system.3. On the basis of detailed analysis methods and models of semantic retrieval based on ontology, this paper has designed and implemented a semantic-based photo retrievalsubsystem to meet the demand of semantic for users.4. Provided three interesting and effective photo management functions. Thesefunctions can attract users to actively participate in the annotation process, so that theannotation is more comprehensive and accurate.
