With the development of information technology and the widespread application ofWireless Personal Area Network, people need a kind of communication technology urgentlywith which our multimedia devices can communicate point-to-point. Facing this Challenge, traditional narrowband transmission technology is not capable to satisfy our needs of mobilityand low power consumption, because the limited frequency bandwidth and the complicatedcircuit design are restrict to the accomplishment. Ultra Wideband (UWB) wirelesscommunication has the feature of low power consumption, high symbol rate and largechannel capacity. Besides the application in multimedia, UWB is a potential technology totransmit physiological signal from inner body sensor to host machine outside and simplify theconnections between medical devices.Reference to the MB-OFDM UWB Physical Layer proposal for IEEE802.15, theparameters of receiver are designed as follow: working frequency range is from3GHz to5GHz, and sensitivity is above-70dBm, total noise figure is less than10dB, input thirdintercept point is over-20dBm, total power consumption is less than60mW. According thedemand above, this paper introduces a design of RF front-end for UWB with carrier. With thefrequency assignment of IR(Impulse Radio) UWB and the architecture of correlation receiver, this design accomplishes the RF front-end in a different way from existing designs. To satisfythe demand of high data rate, it is a homodyne receiver. Low Noise Amplifier (LNA), Mixerand Synthesizer are the core module circuits in this design.Low Noise Amplifier is a narrow band LNA with parallel negative-feedback to spreadfrequency range of input match and is in differential mode to reduce the noise figure. Also thestrengthened signal and local carrier signal are as input of down-convert mixer which is adouble balance mixer, and the mixer output goes through a Low Pass Filter (LPF) to gain thebaseband data. Local carrier signal is produced by a synthesizer which includes a orthogonalVoltage Control Oscillator (VCO) resonance at twice frequency of local carrier and a CurrentMode Logical (CML) frequency half divider as VCO’s buffer. With Cadence Spectre simulator, the circuits are accomplished in Global Foundry0.18CMOS RF process and turned out satisfying the demand.
