This paper mainly introduces the basic theory of the multistate technology and the successful application for signal source VSWR’s accurate measurement. Signal source is the important component of the microwave test system to provide the test signal. Signal source VSWR is an expression of the amplitude of reflection coefficient, to describe the match degree between the signal source and other microwave device of the testing system. Signal source VSWR’s accurate measurement can enhance the accuracy of our understanding of signal source, improve the reliability of the whole testing system.The traditional methods for measuring VSWR include the measuring line method, the scalar network analyzer method, and the sixport test method etc. These methods play a critical role in practical engineering. But these are very difficult to achieve accurate measurement. The multistate technology is developed on the basis of the six port technology. It can not only realize the accurate measurement of the signal source VSWR, but also can get the vector information of signal source reflection coefficient, with high precision, short period, simple circuit and low cost advantages.This paper is originated from the advanced technology research of China Electronics Technology Group the forty-first Institute’s Electronic Testing Technology Key Laboratory. This paper builds the suitable test circuit system on the basis of the theory. And a large number of test works are performed. The paper treats the test principle and test circuit system design in details, and deals with a predetermined implementation of simulation of the testing principle and measurement system. The simulation results are used to verify the correctness of the testing principle and algorithm, on the basis of that, a further verification of the actual circuit is conducted. In addition, the experimental data are processedand the uncertainty analysis is made in details. Hence the accurate measurement results of the signal source VSWR are obtained.
