As products renewal speed in the modern manufacture industry increases, thetraditional design method cannot catch up with the public demands for the speed ofproducts change. CAD parametric design has become an important developmentorientation in the present mechanical design field and has gradually begun to replace thetraditional mechanical design method. More and more technical staff starts to use it invarious fields. CAD parametric design is characterized by short design cycle, highefficiency. Its character of performing product check and product analysis in the softwaredirectly makes it meet the product design needs demanded by modern manufactureindustry.As the most common transmission part in the transmission device, gear has highefficiency, high reliability, long life span and extensive application range. Herringbonegear is specifically common in shipping and coal machinery industry. Its many merits suchas high transfer efficiency, smooth operation, low noises and offsetting axial forces gain itmore usage in the other industries as well.This article aims at herringbone gear parametric design based on UG6.0. Mainresearch contents include:1) By compared with the transmission characteristics of the helical gear, thetransmission characteristics calculation formula of the herringbone gear was derived andthe basis for gear parameters selection was obtained.2) The overall design idea of the herringbone gear in the UG environment was given.The mathematical model of the herringbone gear’s critical curves, i.e. involutes, transitioncurve and spiral, was established. Parametric3D modeling was carried out through"associated expression method" to the herringbone gear;3) Virtual meshing assembly of a herringbone gear were performed. Interferenceanalysis check was taken to determine the assembly validity. Using the ADAMS software,dynamics simulation analysis on the herringbone gear force state was conducted to verifythe gear design rationality;4) By using the ANSYS Workbench software, the meshing characteristics of the staticstate herringbone gear assembly model was confirmed and the analysis was executed.By analyzing force state and meshing characteristics of herringbone gear, theperformance of the herringbone gear structure can be better understood and it provide a reference for design of the herringbone gear.
